What Is WPC Decking and Why It's Perfect for Australian Weather

Anyone comparing decking options for long enough runs into the term WPC. It sounds technical, but the idea behind it is simple: combine the strength of plastic with the warmth of timber into a single board built to survive an Australian backyard. Here is what WPC decking actually is, how it compares to composite timber more broadly, and why it holds up so well in our climate.

What Does WPC Decking Actually Mean?

WPC stands for wood-plastic composite, which is why you will also see it sold as wood plastic decking. The boards are made by blending wood fibres with plastic, usually recycled HDPE. The mixture is heated and extruded into board profiles that carry a natural timber grain. A capping layer sits over the core for extra protection against sun, moisture and everyday wear. The result is WPC decking boards that look and feel close to timber, without the rot, warping or splintering that comes with the real thing.

WPC vs PVC: Comparing the Two Types of Composite Timber Decking

WPC is one type of composite timber. The other common option is PVC composite, which uses a foamed PVC core with an ASA capping layer and contains no wood fibre at all. Our HOME range is a WPC product, while our ADVANCED range uses the PVC approach for projects that need the highest slip rating and longest warranty.

What Does WPC Decking Cost?

WPC is the more affordable type of composite. Our HOME range boards start from around $125 per square metre, compared with around $190 per square metre for ADVANCED PVC boards. Your installed price will also depend on the sub-frame, fixings, labour and site conditions. Wood plastic decking usually costs more upfront than treated pine, but it never needs oiling, sanding or staining, so the gap closes over time. Why WPC Decking Suits the Australian Climate

Australian conditions are hard on outdoor materials, and WPC decking is built with that in mind. The composite structure resists rot, termite damage and splintering, and it holds its colour under UV exposure far better than raw timber. Slip resistance is also built in. Our HOME range carries an R11 slip rating under AS 4586, along with a BAL-29 fire rating for homes in bushfire-prone zones. Lighter colours in the range use NatureCool technology, which keeps the surface up to 10 to 20 degrees cooler than standard boards in direct sun, so the deck stays comfortable underfoot through summer.

Inside WoodEvo’s HOME Range

WoodEvo’s HOME range is a WPC composite decking line made from 95% recycled materials, purpose-built for everyday Australian backyards. Boards come in a 138 mm width with grooved and edge profiles, plus a 180 mm fascia board, and the range carries a 25-year residential warranty along with Global GreenTag and CodeMark certification. Nine colour options are available, from lighter shades like Snow White and Vic Ash through to darker tones such as Charcoal and Teak, giving you a natural timber look without the ongoing maintenance.

Where WPC Decking Works Best Around the Home

WPC decking suits most outdoor living spaces, from entertaining decks and alfresco areas to pool surrounds where slip resistance matters most. Because it does not swell, rot or splinter, it also holds up well in shaded or damp corners of the yard where timber tends to struggle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WPC decking the same as composite timber?

WPC decking is one type of composite timber. Composite timber is the broader category, which also includes ASA-capped PVC boards like our ADVANCED range.

Does WPC decking get hot in summer?

It can warm up in direct sun like any solid surface, especially in darker colours. Lighter HOME range colours use NatureCool technology to stay noticeably cooler underfoot.

How long does WPC decking last?

WoodEvo’s HOME range is backed by a 25-year residential warranty and engineered to resist rot, termites and fading for decades with minimal upkeep.
